We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Acker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?

Not quitting when the going got tough. I imagine most individuals that decide to work for themselves encounter difficult situations that affect their business, themselves and their families. Discovering ways to persevere and overcome those obstacles has ultimately brought me to place of success and created what’s unique about my business.

What should our readers know about your business?

Acker Optique is a full service optometry practice in Atlanta, GA. We offer comprehensive digital eye exams, prescription eyewear including, eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses. Today’s Acker Optique was developed from several years of working within the ophthalmic industry at several different offices both corporate and private. Our style of practice is a personal, concierge optical experience. We offer both in person and tele-optometry virtual exams, where the patient comes into the office and our technicians perform all the the digital ophthalmic testing then the patient meets with the doctor via a high definition screen using a medical zoom platform. We even offer virtually based consultations where we can meet with the patient from the convenience of their home. We’re currently super excited to be one of a few locations that offer the recently released Wakanda Forever Black Panther eyewear line. These iconic sunglasses and optical frames were designed from a collaborative effort between Marvel Studios and Bohten Eyewear. Acker Optique is an official distributor of this unique eyewear brand.

We opened the first Acker Optique location in New Orleans, LA, my home town, back in 2001. After evacuating to Atlanta, GA in 2005 during hurricane Katrina, we reopened for business in 2008 with a location on the campus of GA Tech, then opening a second location in the west end area of Atlanta. After several challenges we ultimately closed those locations and focused more on our ackeroptique.com online optical. We were prepared to open a new physical location in 2020 but decided not to as the news of the upcoming COVID pandemic broke.

None of this was easy but I believe it was all necessary. During the years of the pandemic I did optical home visits and met with patients one on one. This turned out to be quite a hit and has led to our next endeavor in which Acker Optique is about to launch our Mobile Frame Stylist option which our opticians can come out to your home, office or one of our five satellite locations to allow you to select your eyewear and perform your custom eyewear adjustment. Acker Optique, eyewear made affordable, accurate, convenient.
